What do you do to get companies and candidates to your job bloard?
I tried contests (with books as prizes), a little Adwords (in the beginning), asking bloggers (from the marketing field)(as my job board is for marketing jobs) for their support at the website launch.
And also I made a LinkedIn group for people in Marketing Communication field and promoted the website on this group.
Since my niche is very small, most of my hits are from word of mouth. In the beginning though Adwords helped a ton.
I heard a quote that said it takes people three to five times to receive a message.. Hence tv advertising. I always keep this in mind.
Nowadays you'd expect a site to have
Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other social bookmarking
I'd also recommend link exchanges However the best way to attract visitors is to add value to your site and find ways to best help the jobseeker/employer
I've read so heaps in this and they all weems to point ot content.. Content is king. What would you want from you're siteif your were a JS or a Employer
How did most of you start your advertising? I was focusing on SEO method, and getting links out there but haven't generated much traffic.

SEO is always very important. There's tons of ways that people search for websites and, obviously, a search engine like Google or Yahoo are it. Google has recently updated their search algorithms so if you're following posts on how to do good SEO, make sure they're up-to-date as the wrong information can make/break your site.
You could always try standard practices that small businesses use. Flyers, local advertising, business cards, etc.
There's plenty of good advice on Job Board Doctor or Job Boarders.

Fact is the first thing you need is a "concept". Like @jupjupp-you send mail. Maybe you're familiar with Mailchimp, they have a concept. So does flickr and faceboo'm
Once you have a concept you can start manipulating it to your sites target audience.
Integrating it with social networks, competitions which entries are made using a network etc.
I have a concept of realism. In my country a lot of job boards have scams. Therefore I aim to be different.
I am preparing a email list of all my local recruitment offices and looking at classifieds for recent job ad emails. I believe sending out an email will work and perhaps integrating it into a eportfolio script will too.
