Back 100% to open-source

About a month ago, we launched jobberBase Pro, a compiled version of jobberBase + some extra features requested by a lot of customers.

It was a challening month for our team, one in which we saw our focus dilluted between fixing bugs, working on new features and offering support for Pro customers.

Why did we launch Pro in the first place?

For 2 reasons:

  1. We saw that customers tend to request the same extra features that aren’t curently implemented in jobberBase open-source and we wanted to give them easy access to them.
  2. We wanted to experiment a dual-licensing revenue model, as we don’t have a revenue model and need to support further development.

What did we learn?

An open-source project and the community that forms around it is a living organism that reacts to change.
Our great community is alive & kicking and its feedback was mixed: some liked the Pro version and some didn’t. And it was perfectly understandable why they didn’t, which made us rethink our strategy.

Open-source is our way

We never forgot this, but we let it become second priority.

Well, this is ending *now* and we’re back 100% on the open-source version and have stopped distributing Pro.

We still offer support for Pro customers and want to make them achieve their goals with the purchase!

The next big thing

In the following months we’ll keep releasing small updates and bug fixes, but the main development focus will be on a new version, one that’s plugin-friendly.
Once this version is live, you (developers) will be able to build plugins and themes for jobberBase. We can’t wait to get there, guys!

So, in the meanwhile, keep an eye on this blog, follow us on Twitter and get involved in our growing community.

Kudos.

So, the code base for “pro” isn’t going to be released as the next version of Jobberbase?

There’s a lot of us who would like to access that, of course, and I just want to figure out if it’s not going to be sold, then what is going to happen with it?

  2. Filip says:

    hi @hash,
we won’t release the pro extra features at least for the next 6 months. but some bug fixes and architectural updates we did in pro, however, we’ll bring back to open-source.

once the new, plugin-friendly, version is out, we’ll build curren’t pro’s extra features as plugins and distribute them.

  3. silvius says:

Why wait for 6 months? :)
We will release joobsbox.com in a couple weeks.

  4. evertsemeijn says:

@Filip I’m sorry that the Pro release didn’t work out right. Hope we can keep expanding the community and see some great tweaks being born in the coming time.

@silvius Why should we use it? According to your features it has lot less than JB. So…

Jobberbase(the 1.6 base version) has taught me a lot of things hitherto unknown to me. I have extended it to do many more things, without disturbing Filip’s base architecture.

When pro version was launched, I was happy, but was a little intrigued about the pricing strategy.

Anyway, All the best to Jobberbase, any change is always for the good.

Will be on the look out for the next version.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for programmers to code for jobberbase you can reach me at this vatsala[dot]dorairajan[at]gmail[dot]com. Will be more than happy to be able to participate in jobberbase’s next version.

    Hello,
I was thinking about purchasing the pro 2 days ago and today I see it and it is gone. I’ve already hired a developer to do few enhancements and I’m totally lost. Please assist and let me know how to purchase this.

  7. Filip says:

Thanks for your support @evertsemeijn and @Vatsala!
    @Srikanth, I’ve emailed you.

  8. silvius says:

@evertsemeijn the website is under construction, the complete list of features is not featured. expect for big things.

  9. Martin says:

Whilst this is huge news I wish you, the team and the community the best on it’s realigned endavour.

Silvius, it’s fully inappropriate to hijack a post with your unfinished product that’s seemingly based on jobberbase.

Inform the jobberbase community in the forums once you are ready, don’t be a barking dog that won’t deliver…

  10. silvius says:

@Martin it was not that intention.

  11. Martin says:

    @Silvius

I’m sure there was no bad intention – Filip could’ve chosen not to publish your comment…

I’m eagerly awaiting how your app will look like, competition is always good and will create further interest in both projects!

  12. Patrick says:

Like Srikanth I also was about to purchase JobberBase Pro. Are you still willing to distribute the product in any way?

  13. Sim2K says:

Hi, i was looking to purchase the Pro version (even though for a open source software, I thought it was a little bit expensive) but the main reason i wanted the pro version was because i wanted the applicant and the company to both login and so I can set up a payment feature with PayPal on the site for the payment of posting jobs. I think most the people where after the PayPal version .. So when will you be releasing a payment part, the PayPal add-on to the site? I dont mind paying for that option when and if it comes available.

I dont mind waiting and trying out your version 1.8 on its arrival as long as the PayPal option is not far behind with the applicant and Company login as well.

  14. rodel says:

i was willing to dump my jobberbase enhancement for this pro version but i guess i have to wait for a couple of months to check on the architecture..
